7日目がスタートしました。今日はみんなが待ちに待った、サンフランシスコ観光とメジャーリーグ観戦のお楽しみの一日です。
滞在しているカリフォルニア州立大学イーストベイ（ヘイワード）からサンフランシスコ中心部までは、車でおよそ一時間ほどの距離にあります。
【ゴールデンゲートブリッジ】
まず向かったのは、ゴールデンゲートブリッジがよく見える広場です。着く直前までは霧がかかっていたのですが、到着した時にはすっかり晴れて、きれいな青空と一緒に記念撮影ができました。気温は15℃ほどでしょうか、かなり寒かったのですが、開放的な景色を楽しむことができました。
広場の先は砂浜のビーチになっていて、とても良い景色です。海の先には、かつて刑務所があったことで知られるアルカトラズ島も見ることができました。
さすが子供たち、海を見ると突っ走っていきます。そして予想通り、何人か足を濡らしていました💦
【ピア39】
次に訪れたピア39は、サンフランシスコの有名な観光地です。お土産物屋さんやレストラン、アトラクションがあり、桟橋の先にいるたくさんのアシカも名物として知られています。週末ということもあり、たくさんの観光客が訪れていました。
生徒たちはお土産を買ったり、アシカを見たりしましたが、やはり一番盛り上がっていたのは乗り物でした！
ピア39から球場まで、先日無人AIタクシーWaymoに乗らなかった生徒たちはWaymoで移動し、それ以外の生徒はバスで移動しました。
その移動中、サンフランシスコの街中では本当にたくさんのWaymoが走っている様子を見ることができました。
こちらは左がWaymo、右がAmazon関連企業が開発した無人タクシー「Zoox」です。Zooxにはハンドルがなく前後の区別がない双方向走行のユニークな車です。
【Oracle Park でメジャーリーグ観戦】
そしてお待ちかねのOracle Park。サンフランシスコ・ジャイアンツ対ロサンゼルス・エンジェルスの試合を観戦しました。
内野のグラウンドに近い、3塁側の席だったのでとてもよく見えました。エンジェルスのホームランで先に4点取られてしまい4-1と厳しい展開でしたが、9回に追いつくチャンスがあり、球場全体が盛り上がりました。
今日の試合はここから見ることができます。この球場の3塁側に私たちが座っていました！
昨日の授業でデータ分析した選手も出場していて、「この選手が活躍したら先生にごほうびがもらえるかも」と話しながら応援していました。学んだことが実際の試合とつながる、貴重な体験になりました。
【ナイトアクティビティ：Paper Plane Competition】
朝はとても寒く、野球観戦の時はとても暑かったので、疲れて帰りのバスではみんなぐっすりでした。動き回った一日だったので、ナイトアクティビティは室内で落ち着いて行いました。
今日はPaper Plane Competition（紙飛行機大会）です。
最初は「折り方がわからない」と言っていたのですが、ネットで調べたりして折り方を研究し、意外にもみんな超真剣でした。今日の1位は🥇Tokioさん、2位は🥈Hirotoさんでした。おめでとうございます！
【今日のリフレクション】
今日のキーワードは二つです。
一つ目は「Serendipity（思いがけない幸運）」。
実はゴールデンゲートブリッジを見る場所は、当初は違う場所を予定していました。しかし渋滞がひどく、たどり着くまでに時間がかかりそうだったので、別の道に逸れ、違う場所で見ることにしました。結果的にはそちらの場所の方がよく見え、みんなも楽しむことができました。人生は一つの道ではなく、違う道に行ったからといってそれは失敗や間違いではなく、成功につながる道になるかもしれないというお話です。
二つ目は「物事の見方を変えれば、考え方も変わる」
“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
― Wayne Dyer の言葉です。
明日何を学びたいかを発表する中で、「考え方が変わった」と話す子もいました。何か少し失敗したとしても、見方を変えればそれは成長かもしれない。物事をポジティブに見ることで次のステップに進めるかもしれない。そんな意味を込めて、Matt先生がこの言葉をみんなに紹介しました。
朝の寒さと日中の暑さの気温差の大きい一日でしたが、生徒たちは元気いっぱいに動き回り、笑顔で楽しんでいました。学んだことと実際の体験がつながる場面もあり、一日を通して大きく成長していることを感じます。
さて、明日もお楽しみがたくさんです。早く寝て体力を回復させ、明日に備えます。

Q. サンフランシスコ市内やスタジアムでの安全面は大丈夫でしょうか？
A. サンフランシスコ中心部や球場は週末で多くの観光客が訪れており、スタッフが常に生徒たちに付き添って行動しました。移動はバスで行い、点呼を徹底しています。Oracle Parkでは3塁側のまとまった席で観戦しました。
Q. 野球観戦は授業とどのように関係しているのですか？
A. 前日の授業で選手のデータ分析を行っており、その選手が実際に試合に出場していました。生徒たちは学んだデータと目の前の試合を結びつけながら観戦することができ、机上の学びが実体験につながる良い機会となりました。
Q. GIQキャンプに参加するにはどのくらいの英語力が必要ですか？
A. GIQキャンプは英語力そのものよりも、データや数字を使って考える力を育てることを主眼としています。授業やアクティビティは英語で行われますが、スタッフがサポートするため、英語に不安のある生徒も参加しながら少しずつ慣れていくことができます。
GIQ Silicon Valley Summer Camp – Day 7
Day 7 has begun. Today was the day everyone had been looking forward to: sightseeing in San Francisco and a Major League Baseball game. From our home base at California State University, East Bay in Hayward, the center of San Francisco is about an hour away by bus.
The Golden Gate Bridge
Our first stop was a plaza with a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Fog covered the area until just before we arrived, but by the time we got there the sky had cleared beautifully, and we took commemorative photos against a lovely blue sky. It was around 15 degrees Celsius and quite chilly, but we all enjoyed the wide, open scenery.
Beyond the plaza was a sandy beach with a wonderful view. Out across the water we could even see Alcatraz Island, famous for its former prison. As you might expect, the moment the children saw the ocean they ran straight for it, and as predicted, a few of them got their feet wet.
Pier 39
Next we visited Pier 39, one of San Francisco’s most famous tourist spots. It has souvenir shops, restaurants, and attractions, and the many sea lions gathered at the end of the pier are a well-known sight. Being the weekend, the area was full of visitors. The students bought souvenirs and watched the sea lions, but the biggest excitement of all came from the rides.
Major League Baseball at Oracle Park
Then came the long-awaited visit to Oracle Park, where we watched the San Francisco Giants play the Los Angeles Angels. Our seats were on the third-base side, close to the infield, so we had an excellent view. The Angels hit a home run and took an early lead of 4-1, making it a tough game, but there was a chance to tie it up in the ninth inning, and the whole stadium came alive.
A player whose data the students had analyzed in class the day before was also playing. The students cheered him on, joking that if he did well their teacher might give them a reward. It was a valuable experience to see what they had learned connect to a real game.
Night Activity: Paper Plane Competition
The morning was very cold and the ballgame very hot, so the students were tired and slept soundly on the bus ride home. Since it had been such an active day, we held a calm, indoor night activity: a Paper Plane Competition. At first some students said they did not know how to fold a plane, but they researched folding techniques online and became surprisingly serious about it. Today’s winner was Tokio, with Hiroto in second place. Congratulations to them both.
Today’s Reflection
There were two keywords today. The first was “Serendipity,” or unexpected good fortune. We had originally planned to view the Golden Gate Bridge from a different location, but heavy traffic meant it would have taken a long time to get there, so we took a different road and viewed it from another spot. In the end that new location gave us an even better view, and everyone enjoyed it. Life is not a single road; taking a different path is not necessarily a failure or a mistake, and it may even lead to success.
The second keyword was “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change,” by Wayne Dyer. As students shared what they wanted to learn tomorrow, some said their way of thinking had changed. Even a small failure may be growth if you look at it differently, and viewing things positively rather than negatively can help you take the next step. Mr. Matt shared this quote with everyone with that meaning in mind.
Although the day swung between a cold morning and a hot afternoon, the students were full of energy, moving about and smiling all day. Seeing their classroom learning connect with real experiences, we could feel how much they are growing.
Tomorrow holds many more things to look forward to. We will get to bed early, recover our energy, and prepare for another day.
