6日目のスタートです。毎日とても過ごしやすい気候が続いていますが、今日はサンフランシスコ・ベイエリアのヘイワードでも特に涼しく、気持ちの良い一日となりました。土曜日ですので少しゆっくりとしたスタートです。
【朝食とリフレクション】
今日の朝食は寮のコモンスペースでいただきました。昨夜のジェンガが長引いたため、朝食を食べながら昨日のリフレクションを行いました。テーマは「Growth Mindset(成長思考)」です。
ここに到着してからの5日間で自分が成長したと思うことを、一人ずつ話してもらいました。
「英語をもっと話せるようになった」「英語が嫌いだったけれど、話すことが楽しくなって好きになった」「ネイティブの人と話せるようになった」など、それぞれがしっかりと自分の言葉で発言できていました。
【ジェンガ・ワールドカップ決勝戦】
そして昨夜から持ち越しになったジェンガ・ワールドカップの決勝戦です。
スペイン対ベルギーの戦いは、ベルギーチーム (Miu、Kenta、Yoshi) の勝利となりました。ジェンガになるとみんなが本当に真剣になり、見ている私たちも息をのんで見守っていました。
【データサイエンス授業】
今日は一日を通してデータサイエンスの授業です。
まずはバスケットボールのシュートが打たれた場所の統計を見て、傾向や分析を行いました。
さらに昨日集計したみんなのデータをもとに、ベスト3のプレーヤーは誰か、この中でバスケのドリームチームを作るなら誰を選ぶかをチームで話し合い、発表しました。
ベスト3は、バスケットボールチームに所属するローカル生のKavyaが1位、同じく学校のバスケ部のYoshiが2位、そしてItaruが3位でした。ドリームチームにはこの3名に加えて、SotaroとKentaの名前も挙がりました。
スピードやパワーなど、それぞれのポジションでどんなスキルが求められ、誰がそれに合ったデータを出しているかを分析します。身近なテーマだけあって、ディスカッションはとても活発でした。
【野球のデータ分析】
次のテーマは野球です。明日はMLBの野球観戦に行くため、その準備として、サンフランシスコ・ジャイアンツの5名の選手の中で誰が一番優秀だと思うかを、自分たちがGM(ゼネラルマネージャー)になった気持ちで考えてみました。
日本では企業がプロ球団を保有することが多いですが、MLBのほとんどのチームは超富裕層の個人が保有し、GMは野球関連の人ではなくデータサイエンスの専門家が担っているそうです。
それぞれのチームで5名の選手の勝率や打率など、多種多様なデータを見比べて、誰が一番優秀な選手だと思うかを話し合いました。選んだ選手が翌日の試合で活躍したら景品がもらえるということもあり、真剣にデータを見つめながら話し合う姿はとても格好よかったです。

【実際に投球してデータ収集】
最後は外に出て、実際に投球をしてみました。ストレート、カーブ、ナックルなどの握り方で一人ひとりが投げてみて、どの的に当たるかのデータを取っていきます。次回のクラスでは、このデータを使って改めて分析をしていく予定です。
【ランドリータイム】
今日の授業はこれで終了です。ディナーの後はランドリータイムでした。アメリカの大きな洗濯機を各自で使ってみます。この大学の洗濯機と乾燥機は無料で利用することができます。
こういう時には、自分のことは全て自分でしなければいけません。普段はお家の方が洗濯をしてくれているかもしれませんが、今日は自分で洗濯物をまとめ、洗濯から乾燥まで行い、取り込んで片づけるという作業をやり切りました。少しでもお家の方への感謝を感じてくれたら嬉しく思います。
洗濯や乾燥の待ち時間には夕陽を見に行ったり、バスケやサッカーをしたりと、思い思いに過ごしました。
【折り返しのリフレクション】
今日はちょうどサマーキャンプ日程の折り返しにあたるため、リフレクションのテーマは「この6日間で一番のハイライト」でした。
「みんなに出会った最初の日が一番印象に残っている」
「ゲストスピーカーの話を聞けて良かった」
「スタンフォードに訪問して将来の進路について考えることができた」
「スタンフォードの学生と話し、海外の大学への行き方を聞けたこと」

「自分の人生の中で最高の1週間だと思う」といった声が挙がりました！
キャンプリーダーのMattから「1週間経ったけど、もう1週間あるよ」と伝えると、拍手が沸き起こりました。みんな元気いっぱいで、体調を崩す子もなく、日ごとに英語や発言への自信を深めています。折り返しを迎えても、その成長ぶりが頼もしく感じられます。
明日と明後日は外に出て、また新しい経験をたくさんします。残りの一週間も、みんなで成長していきましょう。

GIQ Silicon Valley Summer Camp – Day 6
Welcome to Day 6. The weather has been very pleasant every day, but today was especially cool and comfortable here in Hayward in the San Francisco Bay Area. As it is Saturday, we started the day a little more slowly than usual.
Breakfast and Reflection
We had breakfast in the dormitory common space. Since last night’s Jenga game ran long, we held yesterday’s reflection while eating. The theme was “Growth Mindset.” One by one, students shared what they felt they had grown in over the first five days. Comments included “I can speak more English now,” “I used to dislike English, but speaking has become fun and I’ve come to like it,” and “I can now talk with native speakers.” Everyone expressed themselves clearly in their own words.
Jenga World Cup Final
Then came the Jenga World Cup final that had carried over from last night. In the match between Spain and Belgium, Team Belgium (Miu, Kenta, and Yoshi) took the victory. When it comes to Jenga, everyone becomes truly serious, and even we staff watched with bated breath.
A Full Day of Data Science
Today was a full day of data science classes. First, students looked at statistics of where basketball shots were taken and analyzed the trends. Then, using the data everyone had collected the day before, they discussed and presented in teams who the top three players were and who they would choose for a basketball dream team.
The top three were Kavya, a local student who plays on a basketball team, in first place; Yoshi, also on his school’s basketball team, in second; and Itaru in third. For the dream team, along with these three, the names Sotaro and Kenta also came up. Students analyzed what skills each position requires and who produced the matching data. Because the topic was so relatable, the discussion was very lively.
Baseball Data and Preparing for Tomorrow
The next theme was baseball. Since we are going to an MLB game tomorrow, students prepared by imagining they were the GM (General Manager) and deciding which of five San Francisco Giants players they thought was the best. In Japan, companies often own professional baseball teams, but most MLB teams are owned by very wealthy individuals, and their GMs are often data science specialists rather than baseball people. Comparing win rates, batting averages, and various other data, the students discussed who the strongest player was. With a prize on offer if their chosen player performed well in the next day’s game, they looked very cool studying the data seriously.
Pitching and Collecting Data
Finally, we went outside and tried pitching for ourselves. Each student threw the ball using different grips such as a fastball, curveball, and knuckleball, and we recorded data on which targets they hit. In the next class, we will use this data for further analysis.
Laundry Time
That wrapped up today’s classes. After dinner, it was laundry time. Each student tried using the large American washing machines, and the university’s washers and dryers can be used for free. At times like this, students must take care of everything themselves. While a parent may usually do the laundry at home, today each student gathered their own clothes, washed and dried them, and put everything away. We hope they felt at least a little gratitude for what their families do at home. While waiting for the wash and dry cycles, they watched the sunset or played basketball and soccer.
The Halfway Reflection
Today marks the midpoint of the summer camp, so the reflection theme was “What has been your biggest highlight over these six days?” Responses included: the very first day of meeting everyone, hearing from the guest speakers, visiting Stanford and thinking about their future paths, talking with Stanford students and learning how to attend universities abroad, being amazed by Waymo, having their opinions and mindsets change through new technology and guest speakers, and feeling that this was the best week of their lives.
When camp leader Matt said, “A week has passed, but there is still one more week to go,” a round of applause broke out. Everyone is full of energy, no one has fallen ill, and day by day they are gaining confidence in their English and in speaking up. Even at the halfway point, their growth is truly reassuring.
Tomorrow and the day after, we will head out and have many more new experiences. Let’s keep growing together through the rest of the week.
