3日目のスタートです。今日の気温は23℃。昨日はとても暑かったので、今日は涼しくて過ごしやすい一日となりそうです。サンフランシスコ・ベイエリアのカリフォルニア州立大学イーストベイ校のキャンパスからお届けします。

【朝のコミュニケーションクラス】
午前はコミュニケーションクラスから始まりました。今日はチームで話し合いながら「アプリ」を作ってみます。
テーマは、人が何かを学ぶために必要なアプリで、「誰のためのアプリか」をチームで決めていきます。ネイティブスピーカーの生徒とも、時には翻訳ソフトも使いながら英語での話し合いを進めていきました。
各チームの発表では、
①コードを練習したり音を聞いてコードを選ぶテスト機能のある「ギター練習アプリ」
②3Dアニメーションで折り方が見られ、学ぶとスターがもらえて次のレッスンがアンロックされる「折り紙アプリ」
③フリープレイやパス・フェイル判定、クイズやスコアボードのある「ピアノ練習アプリ」
④化学記号や元素を選んで詳細を見たりpHラボやクイズができる「Master Chemistry 化学学習アプリ」
と、個性豊かなアイデアが登場しました。
全チームが1時間ほどでアプリのテーマを決め、AIに英語でコードを入れ、完成まで持っていけたことにとても驚きました。どのチームもアプリの完成度が素晴らしかったです！
最後には英語で発表を行い、クラスの前で堂々とコメントも発言することができました。今日のコミュニケーションクラスは、チームメイトとのコミュニケーションだけではなく、AIに的確な指示を出すことでコミュニケーション力も上がるという隠れたテーマも持ちながら提供されました。
【大学のBook Store見学】
ランチの前には大学のBook Storeに立ち寄りました。アメリカの大学のBook Storeは本屋であると同時に、大学グッズやスナック、飲み物、お土産、雑貨なども販売しています。お菓子やノートを購入する子もいて、キャンパスライフの一端を体験できました。
【午後のデータサイエンスクラス Day 2】
ランチの後は2回目のデータサイエンスクラスです。4人ずつのチームに分かれ、Facilitator・Scribe・Timekeeper・Teacher’s Aidの役割を決めました。このチームで発言ポイントを競い、1回発言するごとに1ポイント。一番ポイントを集めたチームにはリクエストしたごほうびがもらえるとあって、昨日はあまり発言できなかった子も積極的に手を挙げていました！
今日までは「Introduction to Data Science」の内容です。シリコンバレーマインドとデータサイエンスを学び、最後のプレゼンテーションでその集大成を見るのがとても楽しみです。
ウォームアップでチームの意見を大きな紙に書いて発表した後、アメリカ人が思う健康的な食べ物と栄養士が健康的だとする食べ物の散布図（scatter chart）や、2003年から2022年までのアメリカ人が自宅での行動に充てる時間のデータを見て、どんな変化や傾向に気づいたか、その理由は何だと思うかを発言していきました。
【ゲストスピーカー】
今日はゲストスピーカーの日でもありました。投資銀行UBSで富裕層の資産管理をされているニールさんより、「シリコンバレーの歴史とこれからの時代を生き抜くヒント」についてお話しいただきました。
シリコンバレーの原点は、1848年の「ゴールドラッシュ」にあるそうです。道具を売り、失敗しても何度でも挑戦する「フロンティア精神」がこの地に根付きました。
やがてスタンフォード大学などが創設され、優秀な若者や移民が集まり、挑戦を資金面で支える投資のエコシステムが誕生。これが現在のシリコンバレーの強みだといいます。
Fortune 500企業の約半分は移民やその子孫が創業しており、「失敗は学び（Failure is an Education）」と捉え、リスクを取る文化が世界的なイノベーションを生み出し続けているとのことでした。
「Fail Fast, Start Again. Failure is an Education.」という言葉が印象に残りました。
最初に「Any Questions？」と聞かれた時に静かになってしまったみんなですが、一人が質問をするとどんどんと出てきます！AI、銀行の役割、移民、レアアース・・・など幅広く話が広がりました。どの話が生徒たちの印象に残ったでしょうか。

【夜のプログラム】
夕食の後はKickball（キックベース）で体を動かし、いつも通りリフレクションをして就寝となりました。今回参加の子どもたちはとてもまとまりがあり、自由時間には常にみんなでカードゲームやジェンガを楽しんでいます！
今日の一コマ・・・
ローカルの生徒たちに指遊びを教えて、ランチ後や休み時間に盛り上がっていました。「いっせーのーせ！」ではなく「One Two Three!」という掛け声にしていたのが微笑ましかったです。子どもたちは体調も良く、涼しい気候の中で元気に過ごしています。国を越えた友だちとの交流を通して、コミュニケーションの力もぐんぐん伸びているのを感じます。

Q. コミュニケーションクラスのアプリ作りは、英語が苦手でも参加できますか？
A. 各チームにネイティブスピーカーが入り、必要に応じて翻訳アプリも使いながら話し合いを進めています。今日は全チームが1時間ほどでテーマを決め、英語での発表まで無事にやり遂げました。安心してご参加いただけます。

A. GIQキャンプではクラスやチーム活動を通じて自然に交流が生まれます。今回もローカルの生徒に日本の指遊びを教え合うなど、言葉の壁を越えて一緒に楽しむ姿が見られました。自由時間にはカードゲームやジェンガなどで打ち解けています。
GIQ Silicon Valley Summer Camp – Day 7
Day 7 begins. Today’s temperature is 23°C. Yesterday was very hot, so today’s cooler weather makes for a comfortable day. We bring you this report from the California State University East Bay campus in Hayward, in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Morning Communication Class
The morning started with the communication class. Today, teams worked together to design an app — an app that helps people learn something, and each team decided who their app would be for. A native speaker joined each team, and the students moved their discussions forward in English, sometimes using a translation app to help.
In the team presentations, we saw a wonderful variety of ideas: (1) a Guitar Practice App with chord drills and a test where you listen and choose the right chord, (2) an Origami App that shows folding steps in 3D animation, awarding stars and unlocking the next lesson as you learn, (3) a Piano Practice App with free play, pass/fail scoring, quizzes and a scoreboard, and (4) “Master Chemistry,” a chemistry learning app with chemical symbols, element details, a pH lab, and quizzes.
Every team decided on their app theme and brought it to completion in about an hour. At the end, they presented in English and were able to confidently share comments in front of the class.
Visiting the University Book Store
Before lunch, we stopped by the university Book Store. In the U.S., a university Book Store is not only a bookshop but also sells campus merchandise, snacks, drinks, souvenirs, and everyday goods. Some students bought sweets and notebooks, getting a taste of campus life.
Afternoon Data Science Class, Day 2
After lunch came the second data science class. Students split into teams of four and assigned roles: Facilitator, Scribe, Timekeeper, and Teacher’s Aid. Teams competed for participation points — one point for each contribution — and the team with the most points earns a reward of their choice. Thanks to this, even students who were quieter yesterday eagerly raised their hands today.
Up through today, the content is “Introduction to Data Science.” After a warm-up in which teams wrote their opinions on large sheets of paper and presented them, students examined a scatter chart comparing foods Americans think are healthy with foods nutritionists consider healthy, as well as data from 2003 to 2022 on how Americans spend their time at home. They discussed what changes and trends they noticed and why they thought those patterns occurred. We look forward to seeing everything they have learned about the Silicon Valley mindset and data science come together in the final presentation.
Guest Speaker Day
Today was also guest speaker day. Neil, who manages wealth for high-net-worth clients at the investment bank UBS, spoke to the students about “The History of Silicon Valley and Tips for Thriving in the Times Ahead.”
He explained that Silicon Valley’s origins trace back to the 1848 Gold Rush. The “frontier spirit” — selling tools and trying again no matter how many times you fail — took root here. Later, Stanford University and others were founded, talented young people and immigrants gathered, and an investment ecosystem emerged to financially support new challenges. This is the strength of Silicon Valley today. About half of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their descendants, and a culture that views “Failure is an Education” and embraces risk continues to generate innovation worldwide. His words stayed with us: “Fail Fast, Start Again. Failure is an Education.”
Evening Program
After dinner, the students got moving with a game of Kickball, then held their usual reflection before bedtime. This group is wonderfully close-knit, and during free time they are always enjoying card games and Jenga together.
Today they taught local students a Japanese finger game, which was a big hit after lunch and during breaks. Instead of the Japanese “Isse-no-se!” they used the call “One Two Three!” — a heartwarming moment. The children are in good health and full of energy in the cooler weather, and we can feel their communication skills growing through friendships that cross borders.
