Dear Parents and members of the Growing IQ and SKYUS community,
My name is Johnny K. Dadlani, and over the past two weeks, I have had the privilege of watching, participating in, and supporting the Growing IQ teachers as they worked with your children. During that time, I may have learned just as much from the students who came to San Francisco as I was able to teach them. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to spend this time with your children and to watch them grow, not only as students, but also as young people beginning to find their own voices.
Although Data Science and Business Science are central parts of this camp, the deeper purpose of the Growing IQ approach is to help students develop the mindset they need to handle unfamiliar situations, approach challenges with confidence, and think independently.
I was also born and raised in Japan, although I did not attend a Japanese public or private school. The world our children are entering is changing at an incredible speed. Artificial intelligence, social media, traditional media, and the constant flow of information around them are shaping how young people think, communicate, and understand the world.
During this program, the SKYUS and Growing IQ teams focused heavily on helping the students move beyond their fear of making mistakes. We encouraged them to express their own opinions, consider different perspectives, and work through open-ended and multifaceted problems that may not have one simple or correct answer.
In the time they spent working with Eric and Matt, I saw meaningful changes in these students. Many arrived hesitant to speak English, worried about giving the wrong answer, or unsure whether their ideas were worth sharing. As the program continued, they gradually began to break through those barriers. They started speaking with more confidence, taking chances with their ideas, and approaching problems in ways that went far beyond a traditional classroom assignment.
Their growth was not limited to Data Science. One of the true goals of this program is to expose students to the people, experiences, and ideas that have helped make Silicon Valley a center of innovation.
Through conversations with professionals in finance, law, technology, entrepreneurship, and other fields, your children met people whose success did not come without struggle. They heard directly from individuals who faced setbacks, made mistakes, and continued pushing forward until they reached a new level of success.
What impressed me most was the change in the questions the students asked. The questions they were asking by the end of the program were far more thoughtful, curious, and mature than the questions they were asking when they first arrived.
They were no longer simply listening for an answer. They were beginning to challenge ideas, make connections, and consider possibilities of their own.
We run Growing IQ because we want to have a lasting impact on how children approach education and the world around them. Our goal is to give students a toolbox of thinking skills that will help them pursue their own paths with confidence, curiosity, and resilience in a world that is constantly changing.
When your children return to Japan, I hope you will take the time to really listen to what they have to say. These students are thoughtful, capable, and far more complex than they may always have the confidence to show.
I was genuinely impressed by each of them. I believe the qualities they demonstrated during this program can help them become future leaders in whatever fields they ultimately choose to pursue.
As I close this blog post, I want to leave you with a question that one of the students asked Eric, me, and an entrepreneur who had joined us to share his experiences:
“As a young teenager, I want to know what will lead to the greatest success. Should I pursue what I am good at, or should I pursue what I love to do?”
As an adult, I was honestly in awe of the depth of that question. It is something many people continue to wrestle with throughout their entire lives, yet this student had the courage and self-awareness to ask it at such a young age.
Even here in Silicon Valley, where success, innovation, risk, and failure often exist side by side, a question like this reminds us why it is so important to give young people opportunities to think deeply, speak honestly, and learn from people whose experiences are different from their own.
When middle school and high school students begin asking questions like this, it gives all of us a reason to smile. It reminds us that these students are not simply preparing for the future. They are already beginning to shape it.
After spending this time with your children, I can say with great confidence that their future is incredibly bright.

保護者の皆さま、そしてGrowing IQならびにSKYUSコミュニティの皆さまへ
Johnny K. Dadlaniと申します。この2週間、Growing IQの講師たちがお子さま方と向き合う姿を見守り、私自身も授業に参加しながら、その学びを支える機会に恵まれました。
Data ScienceとBusiness Scienceは、このキャンプの中心となる学習テーマです。しかし、Growing IQが何よりも大切にしているのは、子どもたちが未知の状況に向き合い、自信を持って課題に取り組み、自分自身の頭で考えるための「姿勢」と「思考力」を育てることです。
私自身も日本で生まれ育ちましたが、日本の公立校や私立校に通った経験はありません。現在、子どもたちがこれから歩んでいく世界は、かつてない速さで変化しています。AI、ソーシャルメディア、従来のメディア、そして日々絶え間なく流れ込んでくる情報は、若い世代の考え方やコミュニケーションのあり方、さらには世界の捉え方にまで大きな影響を与えています。
お子さま方をお預かりしたこの短い2週間の中で、SKYUSとGrowing IQのチームが特に力を注いできたのは、「間違えることへの恐れ」を乗り越えられるようにすることでした。
自分自身の意見を言葉にすること。異なる立場や考え方にも目を向けること。そして、必ずしも一つの正解があるとは限らない、複雑で多面的な課題に向き合うこと。その一つひとつを、私たちは大切にしてきました。
EricやMattと過ごした時間を通して、私は生徒たちに確かな変化が生まれていることを感じています。
当初は、英語で話すことに不安を感じていた生徒もいました。間違った答えを言ってしまうことを恐れていた生徒や、自分の考えを人前で共有する価値があるのか、自信を持てずにいた生徒もいました。
しかし、プログラムが進むにつれて、子どもたちは少しずつその壁を乗り越え始めました。以前よりも自信を持って発言し、間違いを恐れずに新しい考え方を試し、従来の教室での学びという枠を超えて、さまざまな角度から課題に向き合うようになっています。
子どもたちの成長が見られたのは、Data Scienceの授業だけではありません。
このプログラムの大きな目的の一つは、Silicon Valleyをイノベーションの中心地へと築き上げてきた人々や、その経験、考え方に直接触れる機会を提供することです。
金融、法律、テクノロジー、起業をはじめとするさまざまな分野の専門家との対話を通して、お子さま方は、成功とは決して順調な道のりだけによって生まれるものではないことを学びました。
壁にぶつかり、失敗を経験し、何度も立ち止まりながらも、それでも前に進み続け、次の段階へとたどり着いた方々の言葉を、子どもたちは直接聞くことができました。
私が最も感銘を受けたのは、生徒たちが投げかける質問の変化です。
現在、子どもたちが尋ねる質問は、わずか2週間前と比べても、はるかに思慮深く、好奇心にあふれ、内容も深いものになっています。
ただ答えを聞くだけではなく、目の前の考えに疑問を投げかけ、異なる情報を結び付け、自分なりの可能性を探り始めています。
私たちがGrowing IQを運営しているのは、子どもたちの教育への向き合い方、そして自分を取り巻く世界との向き合い方に、長く残る変化を生み出したいと考えているからです。
変化の激しい世界の中でも、自信と好奇心、そして困難から立ち直る力を持ち、自分自身の道を歩んでいけるようにすること。そのために必要となる「思考の道具箱」を、子どもたちに手渡すことが私たちの目標です。
この2週間を振り返ると、私が子どもたちに何かを教えることができたのと同じくらい、あるいはそれ以上に、San Franciscoを訪れた生徒たちから私自身が多くのことを学ばせてもらったと感じています。
お子さま方とこの時間を過ごす機会をいただけたことに、心より感謝しております。そして日本へ帰国された後は、ぜひ時間を取り、お子さまが何を感じ、何を考え、何を伝えようとしているのか、その言葉に耳を傾けていただきたいと思います。
この生徒たちは、思慮深く、大きな可能性を持っています。そして、自分たちが普段表に出している以上に、複雑で豊かな内面を持っています。
私は一人ひとりの姿に心から感銘を受けました。このプログラムで見せてくれた資質は、将来どのような分野へ進んだとしても、その分野を導くリーダーへと成長するための大切な力になると信じています。
最後に、このブログを締めくくるにあたり、ある生徒がEricと私、そして自らの経験を語るために参加してくださった一人の起業家に投げかけた質問をご紹介したいと思います。
「まだ10代の自分が、将来最も大きな成功を得るためには、何を選ぶべきなのでしょうか。自分が得意なことを追求するべきですか。それとも、自分が本当に好きなことを追求するべきですか。」
大人である私自身、その質問の深さに心から驚かされました。
これは、多くの人が人生を通して考え続ける問いでもあります。その問いを、これほど若い年齢で、自らの言葉で問いかける勇気と自己理解を持っていたことに、私は強く感銘を受けました。
成功、イノベーション、挑戦、そして失敗が、常に隣り合わせに存在するSilicon Valleyにおいても、このような質問は私たちに大切なことを思い出させてくれます。
若い世代が深く考え、率直に自分の思いを語り、自分とは異なる経験を持つ人々と対話する機会を持つことが、どれほど重要であるかということです。
中学生や高校生がこのような問いを持ち始めていることは、私たち大人に大きな喜びと希望を与えてくれます。
子どもたちは、単に未来に向けて準備をしているだけではありません。すでに、自分たちの手で未来を形づくり始めています。
この2週間をお子さま方と共に過ごした今、私は大きな確信を持って申し上げることができます。
この子どもたちの未来は、限りなく明るいものです。
