5日目を迎えました。カリフォルニア州ヘイワードのキャンパスは今日も過ごしやすい陽気で、生徒たちは元気に授業へ向かいました。本日は終日授業の一日です。
朝食ではワッフルが人気でした。
教室ではEric先生がみんなにロリポップキャンディを持ってきてくれて、和やかな雰囲気で一日がスタートしました。
【午前のデータサイエンス授業】
まずは一昨日の続きです。2020年から2026年にかけて、自宅で行うアクティビティにかけた時間の変化をグラフに書き出し、その変化についてのインサイトと理由を発表しました。レジャー、勉強、エクササイズ、宗教・スピリチュアリティ、食事などのカテゴリーがあります。
「6年前は受験勉強に時間を使っていたので2026年の方が減っている」というグラフに見える変化だけではなく、全体的な「傾向」や、理想と現実の差異についても話し合いました。
初日はあまり発言していなかった生徒が先に発表すると、続いて手を挙げる様子も見られ、一歩ずつの成長を感じています。
【相関と因果を考える】
次に、壁に貼ってあるグラフを見て、インサイト、仮説、相関関係や因果関係を考える練習を行いました。
バターの消費量と風力発電の量のグラフ、レコードの販売数とコストコの株価の変化を表したグラフなど、実際に関係があるかどうかわからない、似たような変化を示すデータを見て、どんな関係性があるかの仮説を立てて書き出していきます。
大人でも頭をひねるような問題ですが、皆さん想像力を開放して真剣に考えていました。
特にバターのグラフでは「風力発電が建設されて広い土地ができ、そこが牧場になり牛乳がたくさん採れてバターが増えた」など、とてもクリエイティブな仮説がたくさん出ました。
データサイエンスのアクティビティに正解も間違いもありません。データには様々な見方があることを学んでいきます。
【バスケットボールのデータ収集】
次はみんなが楽しみにしていたバスケットボールのデータ収集です。
2ポイントと3ポイントのシュート成功率に加え、腕の長さ、手のひらの長さ、走るスピード、俊敏性、反射、垂直飛びの長さなどを集計していきました。
今日はこのデータを収集するところまで。明日、集めた数値を使ってこの続きの分析を行う予定です。
【ゲストスピーカー：レッドブル マーケティング部長】
今日のゲストスピーカーは、レッドブルよりお越しいただいたKiyoさんです。レッドブル社のマーケティングについて講義していただきました。
レッドブルは独特なアニメーションのCMで有名ですが、それだけではなく、イベントやスポーツ選手のスポンサー、大規模なサンプリング、フェスの協賛などを通して、レッドブルの世界観が人々の記憶に残るようにマーケティング活動を行っています。
アメリカで育ち、日本で働き、またアメリカに戻る中で経験された様々なお仕事のお話もしていただきました。
Kiyoさんから生徒たちへのアドバイスは、柔軟なマインドを持つこと、自分の弱点を知って克服することで自分の能力全体を上げられること、怖がらずにチャレンジすることの重要性です。
生徒たちからは「どういう時にやりがいを感じますか？」「シリコンバレーのメリットは？」「なぜ転職したのですか？」など、たくさんの質問が出ていました。
【ナイトアクティビティ】
今日のナイトアクティビティは、生徒たちのリクエストにより「ジェンガワールドカップ・シーズン2」です。
白熱の真剣勝負で、何度も飛び出すミラクルプレイに大盛り上がりでした。
準決勝まで進みましたが、みんなが真剣すぎて試合が長引き、決勝戦は明日の朝に持ち越しとなりました(笑)
朝早く起きてしまう子や、まだしっかり眠れていない子もいますが、授業には積極的に参加してくれています。
毎日フルパワーのみんなですが、キャンプ中盤で少し疲れが出てくる頃かと思います。明日は土曜日で朝食が少し遅いので、ゆっくり休んで体力を蓄えてもらいたいと思います。

Q. 今日のデータサイエンスの授業では何を学びましたか？
A. 自分の生活時間の変化をグラフ化して傾向やインサイトを発表したほか、バターの消費量と風力発電量といった一見無関係なデータを見て、相関関係や因果関係の仮説を立てる練習をしました。データには様々な見方があり、正解も間違いもないという考え方を学んでいます。

Q. GIQキャンプでは英語がどのくらいできる必要がありますか？
A. 授業は英語で行われますが、日本人スタッフがサポートするため、英語に不安がある生徒も安心して参加できます。データや図表を使った思考中心の授業のため、言語だけでなく発想力で参加できる場面が多いのが特徴です。
GIQ Silicon Valley Summer Camp – Day 5
We have reached Day 5. The campus here in Hayward, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area, was pleasant again today, and the students headed off to class in good spirits. Today was a full day of classes.
Waffles were the popular choice at breakfast. In the classroom, Mr. Eric brought lollipops for everyone, and the day began in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Morning Group Work
First, the students continued the project they had begun two days earlier. They graphed how the time they spent on various at-home activities changed from 2020 to 2026, then presented their insights and the reasons behind those changes. Categories included leisure, studying, exercise, religion and spirituality, and meals.
Beyond the obvious changes visible in the graphs, such as spending less time studying in 2026 than during exam preparation six years earlier, they also discussed overall trends and the gap between their ideal and actual lives. It was encouraging to see students who had spoken little on the first day raise their hands after another student presented, a sign of steady, step-by-step growth.
Thinking About Correlation and Causation
Next, the students looked at graphs posted on the wall and practiced developing insights, hypotheses, and ideas about correlation and causation. Examples included a graph of butter consumption alongside wind power generation, and one showing record sales next to Costco’s stock price. Looking at data with similar-looking trends whose actual relationship is unclear, they formed and wrote down hypotheses about how the two might be connected.
These are puzzles that even adults find challenging, but everyone let their imaginations run and thought seriously. For the butter graph in particular, creative hypotheses emerged, such as the idea that building wind farms opens up wide land that becomes pasture, producing more milk and therefore more butter. In data science activities, there is no single right or wrong answer. The students are learning that data can be viewed in many different ways.
Collecting Basketball Data
Next came the basketball data collection the students had been looking forward to. In addition to two-point and three-point shooting success rates, they measured and recorded arm length, palm length, running speed, agility, reflexes, and vertical jump height.
Today they only gathered the data. Tomorrow they will use these numbers to continue with the analysis.
Guest Speaker: Red Bull
Today’s guest speaker was Kiyo from Red Bull, who gave a lecture on the company’s marketing. Red Bull is famous for its distinctive animated commercials, but it also keeps its brand world in people’s minds through event and athlete sponsorships, large-scale sampling, and festival partnerships.
Kiyo also shared stories from a varied career: growing up in the United States, working in Japan, and returning to the U.S. Their advice to the students was to keep a flexible mindset, to raise one’s overall ability by recognizing and overcoming weaknesses, and to embrace challenges without fear. The students asked many questions, such as what makes work rewarding, what the advantages of Silicon Valley are, and why Kiyo changed jobs.
Evening Program
Tonight’s activity, chosen by student request, was the Jenga World Cup Season 2. It was a heated, serious competition, with dramatic miracle plays that had everyone cheering. They reached the semifinals, but because everyone played so intently the matches ran long, so the final has been carried over to tomorrow morning.
Some students are staying up late and a few are still not sleeping deeply, but they are participating in class with great enthusiasm. Everyone is giving their full energy each day, and around the midpoint of camp a little fatigue may be setting in. Since tomorrow is Saturday with a slightly later breakfast, we hope they can rest well and recharge.
