いよいよGIQシリコンバレーサマーキャンプ1日目がスタートしました。今日は羽田空港からサンフランシスコへと出発し、滞在先のカリフォルニア州立大学イーストベイ校（CSUイーストベイ）に到着するまでの長い一日です。
【羽田空港で集合】
夏休みの三連休ということもあり、羽田空港は多くの人で賑わっていましたが、セキュリティや出国審査はスムーズに進みました。
その分待ち時間が長くなりましたが、みんなでトランプをしたり人狼ゲームをしたりと、今日会ったばかりとは思えないほど打ち解けていました。年齢に関係なく、あまり人見知りをせずにすぐ仲良くなっていく姿は、さすがシリコンバレーに行こうという皆さんだと感心しました。
少し遅れての離陸となりましたが、無事に出発。夕方に日本を発ち、日付をまたいで再び同じ日の朝からもう一日が始まる、という長時間フライトを終えて、予定通りサンフランシスコに到着しました。長旅、本当にお疲れさまでした。
【サンフランシスコ到着とショッピングモール】
空港では、キャンプリーダーのMattが笑顔で出迎えてくれました！
バスに乗ってショッピングモールへ向かい、フードコートでは英語でのオーダーにも挑戦。
「I’d like to have a tacos with chicken.」「Can I have a cup for water?」など、ウォーターサーバーの水を汲むためのコップをタコスのお店にもらいに行けた子もいました。
タコスが人気でしたが、ラーメンを食べている子もいましたよ。
モールの外では、さっそくWaymoの自動運転タクシーを目にして「おぉーっ！」と歓声が上がりました。ハンドルを握る人がいないタクシーが街を走るのは、まさにサンフランシスコ・ベイエリアならではの光景です。
その後、人気スーパーのTrader Joe’sでもお買い物をしました。部屋のみんなで食べるお菓子や、お土産のエコバッグを購入。
「店員さんがすごく親切だった！」と嬉しそうに話す子もいました。カリフォルニアの店員さんは笑顔で優しく対応してくださいますね。
【CSUイーストベイ校にチェックイン】
その後、滞在先となるハイワードのカリフォルニア州立大学イーストベイ校（CSUイーストベイ）に到着し、学生寮にチェックインしました。ベッドメイキングには少し苦戦している様子でしたが、これも自立のための良い経験です。
夕食は大学のカフェテリアで。やっぱり人気はピザでした。
日本を出発してからあまり寝ずに17時間ほど経っているので、疲れている子はサラダやフルーツで軽めに済ませていました。
【ナイトアクティビティ】
ナイトアクティビティの前に少し休憩……と思ったら、みんな自然と集まってカードゲームを楽しんでいました。みんな本当に元気です！
寮のすぐ裏にある丘にのぼると、サンフランシスコ湾の絶景が広がります🔭
開放的な景色にみんな「気持ちいいー！」「きれい！」とテンションが上がっていました。なんと2頭の鹿にも出会うことができました！
寮に戻ろうとしたところ、男の子たちはまだエネルギーが有り余っている様子で、バスケットボールやサッカーを楽しんでいました。明るいので錯覚しますが、これは夜20時ごろの様子です。。さすがティーンエイジャー、疲れ知らずです！
【1日の締めくくり・リフレクション】
長かった初日の締めくくりは、これから毎日行うリフレクションです。
今日一日で良かったこと、あまり良くなかったことなどを一人ずつ話していきます。
Matt先生からは、
「単語一言＋Because〜を付けて、なぜそう思ったのかも伝えましょう」
「毎日必ず行うので、一日を通して何が良い経験になったかを考えておきましょう」
というアドバイスがありました。
ほぼ全員が羽田空港で初めて出会ったにもかかわらず、初日とは思えないほど仲良く打ち解け、元から友達だったかのようなチームワークが出来上がっています。
この仲間と一緒に過ごす約2週間が、とても楽しみになった初日でした。
今日はみんなかなり疲れているはずなので、しっかり休んで、明日の授業をがんばりましょう！

Q. 長時間フライトのあとの子どもたちの様子は？
A. 日本を出発してからあまり眠らずに17時間ほど経過していたため、疲れている子もいました。夕食ではサラダやフルーツで軽めに済ませる子もいましたが、全員無事にCSUイーストベイ校の寮にチェックインし、体調を崩す子もいませんでした。今夜はしっかり休んで、明日に備えます。
Q. 初日から英語を使う場面はありましたか？
A. はい、Matt先生とサンフランシスコ空港でミートしてからは、半分以上が英語でのコミュニケーションです。食事中や寮でのフリータイムでも、Matt先生やEmmaと積極的に英語で話していました。夜のリフレクションでも、理由を英語で伝える練習が始まっています。
Q. 滞在先の安全管理はどうなっていますか？
A. 生徒たちはCSUイーストベイの学生寮に滞在し、日本人スタッフとキャンプリーダーが常に付き添っています。移動はバスで行い、食事は大学のカフェテリアを利用します。到着から寮のチェックインまで、スタッフが一緒に行動しながら見守っています。
GIQ Silicon Valley Summer Camp – Day 1
Day 1 of the GIQ Silicon Valley Summer Camp has finally begun. Today was a long day of traveling from Haneda Airport to San Francisco and arriving at our home base, California State University East Bay (CSU East Bay).
Departure from Haneda Airport
With the summer three-day weekend underway, Haneda Airport was crowded, but security and immigration went smoothly. The wait afterward was long, so the students played cards and Werewolf together, becoming friends much faster than you would expect from a group that had only just met. Regardless of age, and with hardly any shyness, they warmed up to one another right away — a wonderful sign of the kind of students who choose to head for Silicon Valley.
Our takeoff was slightly delayed, but we departed safely. We left Japan in the evening and, after a long flight that seemed to begin the same morning all over again, we arrived in San Francisco right on schedule. Everyone did a great job on the long journey.
Arrival in San Francisco and the Shopping Mall
At the airport, our local staff Matt and Emma greeted us with warm smiles. We took a bus to a shopping mall, where the students practiced ordering in English at the food court. Phrases like “I’d like to have a tacos with chicken” and “Can I have a cup for water?” were put to use, and some students even went back to the taco shop to ask for a cup for the water dispenser. Tacos were popular, though a few students chose ramen.
Outside the mall, the students spotted a Waymo self-driving taxi and let out cheers of amazement. A taxi cruising the streets with no one behind the wheel is a sight very much unique to the San Francisco Bay Area.
After that, we shopped at the popular supermarket Trader Joe’s. The students bought snacks to share in their rooms and eco-bags as souvenirs. Some were delighted, saying “The staff were so kind!” California store staff really do respond with friendly smiles.
Checking In at CSU East Bay
We then arrived at our home base, California State University East Bay (CSU East Bay) in Hayward, and checked into the student dormitories. The students struggled a little with making their beds, but this too is a valuable experience for building independence.
Dinner was at the university cafeteria, where pizza was once again the favorite. Since it had been about 17 hours with little sleep since leaving Japan, the more tired students kept it light with salad and fruit.
Night Activity
After a short rest, it was time for the night activity — and the students naturally gathered for a card game. Climbing the hill right behind the dorms revealed a stunning view of San Francisco Bay. We even encountered two deer, and the open scenery had everyone excited, calling out “This feels so good!” and “It’s beautiful!”
When it was time to head back to the dorms, the boys still had energy to spare and enjoyed some basketball and soccer.
Wrapping Up the Day with Reflection
We closed the long first day with a reflection, which we will do every day. Each student shares what went well and what did not go so well during the day. Matt gave two pieces of advice: “Add a single word plus ‘Because ～’ so you can also express why you felt that way,” and “Since we do this every day, think throughout the day about what made for a good experience.”
Although nearly everyone met for the first time at Haneda Airport, they have already grown close and built teamwork as if they had been friends for years. It was a first day that left everyone looking forward to the roughly two weeks ahead together. The students must be quite tired today, so we hope they rest well and give their best in tomorrow’s classes.
Tomorrow we will spend the full day at CSU East Bay, with a communication class starting at 9:30 and the GIQ Data Science class at 13:30. See you tomorrow(@^^)/~~~
